What is sitemap and how it’s important from SEO point of view?

Sitemap is a graphical representation of website and its help search engine to index a website more frequently. Basically sitemap are two types – XML sitemap or HTML sitemap and both types of sitemap have their own importance.

XML Sitemap – This format of sitemap is widely acceptable. It is an XML (Extensible Markup Language) file having main index page with all subpages belonging to website.   XML sitemap helps search engine to understand website structure and crawling process.

General Syntax of XML Sitemap:

<?xml version=”1.0″ encoding=”UTF-8″?>

<urlset xmlns=”http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9″>

<url>

<loc>http://www.example.com/mypage</loc>

<lastmod>2013-10-10</lastmod>

<changefreq>monthly</changefreq>

<priority>1</priority>

</url>

</urlset>

HTML Sitemap: This format of sitemap is used for user to understand navigation of whole website form a single page. It is a simple html page having all subpages (inner product or category) links.
